Two Jacks

This was for Conceptart's weekly character challenge, to create at least two of the four Jacks from playing card lore.

I went a modern route, and tried to tie the weapons and clothing to their symbol in a subtle way. Since diamonds have sharp edges like a knife I chose that for the Jack of Diamond's weapon of choice. The club Jack was easier, and I love the British billy-club. I also thought I'd throw in 3 clubs on his chain... because he hates the sight of blood and as he executes three disciplinary beatings for punishments or interrogations he will trade out each club so he doesn't have to hold a bloody one after each strike. The scratches on his arm are from his victims, as they plead for their lives.

Herald of the Flies

This was yet another conceptart battle:

"The Herald is a powerful member of the Queens' court, announcing her arrival and departure, and acts as her body guard and protector. A knight of unrivaled power, The Herald is the one who champions the Queen and all her ventures. "

This took about 8-10 hours I'd guess after scanning in a sketch and blocking in colors, I noodled away at the details and focused primarily on the herald above the queen. He has a conch shell to call the tribe to counsel, a parachute cape from the wreckage... and four feathers signify he is the most honored warrior.

I used Photoshop CS for arond 8 hours I'd guess. I wanted to capture a moment where this farmer who might not fit into modern society can really relate to his new friends. It's his own little moment on the roof that he looks forward to each night.

I did this piece for CA's weekly creature thread. I used Photoshop and about 6 hours. I wanted something that would actually seem like a pet that Cupid might have, but still be a tad on the ugly side. I mixed a pug dog, rabbit and sheep as reference to form the creature itself.

I used PS CS with plenty of truck reference. I actually didn't use much kid reference, but I had the image in my mind about how I wanted to take an everyday event where a kid is not mighty... and somehow MAKE him mighty for a twist.

The Dreamcatcher

This was for another conceptart weekly contest, with a theme of "The Dreamcatcher." I used Photoshop, and spent around 10 hours on it.

The young children of Mother Tulane's orphanage gossip and whisper at bed time. They look forward to the night that the dreamcatcher pays them a visit. Their home is truly a breeding ground for some of the most wonderful dreams, as the children dream harder than other children. When the dreamcatcher arrives he whipsers out to them, and they climb aboard his soft fur. He leaps around their home with his long arms waving and reaching for the dreams that each child requests. When he catches one, he bottles them up and slowly works them down to the ground with the hands on his underbelly.

Dreamcatcher: Hang on kids, HERE....WE...GOOO!
Kids: weee..!

Creek Crawler

Made this in photoshop for conceptart.org's weekly creature contest. I spent about 2-3 days on it, 2-3 hours per sitting. I used some custom made brushes as well.

"This little creek crawler has the unique ability to blow air through a tiny vessel in its tongue, causing the bulbous tip to float. It will twitch its tongue to attract insects or small fish. When its prey has landed or nibbled on the tip of its tongue, a small amount of air will be pushed back into the mouth of this predator signaling it to attack. With its large and powerful gills, this animal can create a powerful suction to slurp in its prey within a fraction of a second. They crawl along creek beds with only two whimpy feet, that barely keep their heavy shells and fat little bellies from sinking. "
He requested a steam-punk pirate kid, who has been a stow-away his entire life. He was supposed to carry two, old pistols and a large blade. I wanted the blade to have a wooden case that resembles an instrument case rather than a normal sheath. I'm not sure how steam-punk he is, but it was very fun.
